R.E Funerals in different religions by Simran Sahota

I have done some research about what different religions do at funerals like what kind if rituals they do. I found some information and i would love to share it with you so here is some information:

Sikhism:

Sikhs burn their dead. As the body is bathed and clothed in fresh clothes by family members, Sikh prayers are said. The ashes are usually gathered afterwards and put afloat in flowing body of water- returning the person’s last physical remains to nature.

Christianity:

When a christian dies, it is seen as the end of his/her life on earth. A funeral is held for friends and family to grieve for the person who has died and give thanks for their life. If someone is on their deathbed a minister will prepare them for death

Islam:

The Islamic funeral ceromony is dictated by sharia law ( Islamic religious law). cremation and other practices are forbidden, so burial always occours along with very specific ritual process. Purity and cleanliness are a vital part of the Islamic faith.

Topic: Rock & Soils + Minerals by Zoe Ka- Ncube

A rock is roughly made up of 2 or more minerals. The rocks you see around you- the mountains, the pavement & the riverbeds, are all made of minerals. E.G. : Think of a chocolate chip cookie as a rock!. The  cookie is made out of flour, butter, sugar & chocolate. The cookie is like a rock and the flour, butter, sugar & chocolate are like minerals. You need minerals to make rocks BUT you don’t need  rocks to make  minerals! I know it sounds confusing  but have you ever heard someone say to you or a teacher say to you like you need sand to make glass but you don’t need glass to make sand. It’s because if you  need minerals to make rocks… What are rocks made off? Minerals, so how can rock make minerals? Did you know that : If you were to cut a mineral shape it would be the same tHrough out! There are about 3000 different minerals in the world. Minerals are made of chemicals- either  a single chemical or a combination of chemicals. There are 103 known chemical elements. Minerals are sorted into 8 groups. Some common examples have been listed for each. When rocks break down into smaller & smaller pieces, they turn into sand. If you look at the sand under a microscope, you will see that sand is made up of the same minerals as the rocks that the sand came from. When plants start to sprout up in sand, it is turning from being just small bits of rock to being soil.

Is a crystal minerals and a type of rock?

The answer is yes. Crystals are minerals that have had the chance to grow in the shape that they were meant to be. Just like your DNA determines the colour of your eyes, how tall you will get to be and the shape of your bones, the chemicals that a mineral is made of determines what shape it gets to be. We can tell different minerals apart by what crystal shape they are. Sometimes minerals form in spaces where there is not a lot of room, so they don’t have a crystal shape. When there is just a big hunk of a mineral, it is called a massive mineral. If there is a definite shape with easy to see flat sides, it is called a mineral crystal. Most of the earth’s crystals were formed millions of years ago. Crystals form when the liquid rock from inside the earth cool and harden. Sometimes crystals form when liquids underground find their way into cracks and slowly deposit minerals. Most minerals crystals take thousands of years to “grow” but some like salt (halite) can form so quickly that you can watch them grow at home! Some people think of crystals as clear pretty rocks that are used for jewelry. Amethyst is a very common quartz crystal. Crystals do not have to be clear, but those are the kinds you will usually see in the stores.

Literacy! Directed and Reported Speech.

In literacy we have been learning about directed and reported speech as a starter before learning about news reports. We have looked at how to change direct speech into reported and reported into directed speech.

Here are some examples of different speeches.

1) ” The costa concordia was tilting to the side unexpectedly!” screamed Amy, a passenger on board.

2) One of the waiters on board the costa concordia has claimned that when the ship started to sink the captain was no were to be seen.

Can you change these sentences into a different type of speech ( for example if sentence one was reported speech turn it into direct speech)?

Can you come up with your own sentences and post them as a comment?

Literacy By Zoe & Simran

This week in Literacy we have been learning about the Costa Concordia cruise ship.

Soon we are going to use the green screen to make our own news reports , just like BBC news! But we have to make sure that we are serious and that we have a formal tone so it is realistic. We have been learning loads as well as writing our facts and making them into news reports. Did you know that Captain Francisco  Schettino jumped out into a life boat when there were 4200 passengers and crew members were still on the ship that was sinking?
We think this is terrible because Captains are  supposed to help people evacuate off the ship safely if there is an emergency.

We also learned that  that the captain wanted to boast and do a little salute to another retired captain  who lived on the island where the Concordia hit some rocks. When it hit the rocks all the lights switched of and the captain told a lie in an announcement, saying that it’s just a electrical problem. Then he dived into one of the lifeboats to save himself.
After a while the passengers were told that they should stay calm and that someone was coming to rescue them.  Meanwhile the captain was forced to get back on the ship and help… Before long  all this tragedy ended and when some of the people got safely on to land then found out that eleven  passengers that were on the ship died and two divers pulled out two elderly men  from the bottom of the ship! According to the chairmen of the cruise ship company (boss) ‘Human error is to blame’  and they do not take responsibility for the incident .  The new revelations according to the captain, who said that the rocks weren’t on his map and that he did follow the safety rules. And there is great news to end from the Italian government- Captain Francisco won’t be sailing any more ships for the rest of his life because Francisco is in jail for the rest of his life. We think he deserves it for the tragedy he had  invented when there was no good reason for it.

This is ‘Costa Concordia’ they say it was one of the largest ship these days!.

This is Captain Francisco Schetonio, who is now called the chicken of the sea because of his foolishness for abandoning the ship while it was sinking.

So watch out and keep your eyes for our news reports we might post them on.

Manchester City’s Dramatic Title Success!

On Sunday 13th May 2012 Man City secured there first League title for 44 years, by beating QPR at the Etihad Stadium! (Man City’s stadium.) It was probably the most dramatic title decider in the 20 years of the Barclays Premier League! On the other hand Manchester United were in 2nd place while Man City were 1st!

Man United went ahead with a fabulous header by Wayne Rooney. The word quickly spread around the Etihad Stadium that Rooney, had headed Man United ahead at Sunderland in the Stadium Of Light! (Sunderland’s Stadium.) But Man City were quick to react when Pablo Zabaleta put home a storming shot which cannoned in off the post! Right now Man City were still top of the tree by ‘Goal Difference’!

Man City were now level at QPR because of Djribril Cisse’s effort which flew past Man City’s keeper Joe Hart! Later on City went behind with Traore’s cross and Jamie Mackie’s diving header. The Man United fans couldn’t believe what had happened at the Etihad Stadium, as United’s match came to an end with a final score of 1-0 to United. However, Man city were still playing with just 5 minutes added time.

Eventually, Edin Dzeko headed Man City level with just 2 minutes to go! Man United fans and players thought they had won the title until they heard that Sergio Aguero had put City ahead with about 25 seconds left! Finally, City had won the title for the 1st time for 44 years!!!

All About The Romans… By Paige

Fashion:

Men:

Men wore knee length tunics, either sleeveless or short sleeved. Roman men wore a cloak around their tunics, it was wrapped around their shoulder and then carefully wrapped around their body.

Intreasting fact:

 Important Romans wore a toga.

Women:

Women wore a tunic that was ankle length. Women wore a stola over which was full length from neck to ankle length, it was then high waisted and fastened at the clasps.

Rich women wore a long tunic that was made with better cotton or silk. They also wore lots of jewellrey and make-up.

How women would have their hair?

They would have their hair in a huge bun and then had curls in. In Roman times their hairstyles was always from ponytails to buns ect ect.

Here is more information about Romans:

Religon:

To keep gods and godesses happy they would have to sacrifice (kill) animals such as sheep and pigs, if the gods and godesses were angry bad things will happen.

Temples:

People worshipped gods in a temple where they made sacrifices to animals and preicous things. Romans really belived that the blood was the best way to commincate with their gods. Sheeps were often sacrificed to Jupitar (a god).

Some temples were only built to worship one god. A temple that you could worship to all gods was known as a Pantheon it was named after the entire collection of their gods Pantheon.

HERE ARE THE WEBSITES I USED: :)

What did the Romans play with??? By Shannon!

Most people in Roman times did not have much spare time. They were too busy working. They liked games though. Soldiers often played board games with counters and dice. Counters and boards for their games have been found.                                                 Hunting was also popular. People hunted animals for fun as well as for food.

Some things the Romans did for fun were horrible. They enjoyed fights between gladiators, and fights between people and animals. These bloodthirsty shows were put on in front of crowds in large arenas called amphitheatres.

What was a Roman play like?

Romans enjoyed the theatre. Most plays were funny comedies, though there were serious tragedies as well. Actors often wore masks to show whether their character was happy or sad! They also wore wigs – an old man had a white wig, a slave had a red wig.

Roman Fun & Games

Romans had lots of different hobbies to keep them busy.
They had games to play at home, plays to go to see and public events for
thousands of people to see.

Children’s games
Roman children had seesaws, swings, kites, hoops and
toy houses to play with. They also played board games like checkers. The girls
had wooden dolls to play with.

The Roman games!

The two games that the Romans liked to watch the most
were chariot racing and gladiator fights. Chariot races were the most popular of
all. The Circus Maximus could have twenty-four chariot races a day.

A racing chariot was a small two-wheeled
cart, pulled by fast horses. Racing was very dangerous and riders often fell off
and were killed. There were four teams : the Reds, Blues, Greens and Whites.
People supported one team and cheered on its drivers – just like supporting a
football team today.

Gladiators were slaves or prisoners made to fight
each other, or wild animals, in front of crowds. These fights were a part of
events called “the games”. They took place in huge open-air buildings called
amphitheatres.

At the end of a
gladiator fight the emperor would often give a “thumbs up” or a “thumbs down”
signal. This was to show whether he wanted the loser to live or to die.

A Roman Theatre!

Roman plays were sometimes copied from
Greek ones. There were two types : tragedies and comedies. A tragedy was a play
with a sad end. A comedy had a happy ending.

The actors wore masks so that it was easy to tell who
they were playing from far away. It must have been difficult to see much from
the back seats anyway.

Snacks were on
sale at big events, they were usually different kinds of fruit or
vegetables.

Parties and buntieqs1
Rich romans
loved to have big parties and feasts. They would eat anything from three to ten
courses. They would have a first course of something like olives, mice, salad,
snails, oysters and perhaps peahens’ eggs. They would then move on to a
selection of meat and fish dishes – stuffed dormice was popular. They would like
to have something special like ostrich, flamingo, peacock or a wild boar as the
centre of their meal. They would then finish off with nuts, fruit, stuffed dates
and honey cakes. Wine was drunk all the way through the meal which could go on
for hours.

The romans used to keep one
room as a vomintorium,  Guests who were full and
wanted to eat more could go into this room to make themselves sick and then
rejoin the group for more food.

They
used to have entertainers like jugglers, acrobats and dancers to perform during
and after the meal.

Children from poor Roman families had to work hard, but they still found some time to play.

Children from rich Roman families did not have to work and had more time to play because they had slaves to do all the work in the house.

The Romans favourite toys and games were:

Children also played with their pets

Dogs
Pigeons
Ducks
Quail
Geese
Monkeys – though these were rare
Cats

Boy’s Games

War games
Wooden sword fights
Wrestling
Tag

Girl’s Games

Rag dolls
Wax dolls
Board games

Balls
Bats
Board games
Hobbyhorses
Kites
Models of people
Models of animals
Hoops
Stilts
Knucklebones (like Jacks
